Privacy Policy

Broaden · Daily Reading Habit App · Last updated: 1 September 2026

1. Who We Are

Broaden is operated by DG Development ("we", "us", "our"). We are based in the United Kingdom. If you have any questions about this privacy policy or how we handle your data, please contact us at hello@broadendaily.com.

2. What Data We Collect

Account Information

  • Email address (when you sign up with email)
  • Name (if you choose to add one)
  • Google or Apple account identifier (if you sign in that way)
  • Avatar selection

Reading Activity

  • Topics you select as interests
  • Articles you open, read, save, and mark as read
  • Article feedback (thumbs up/down ratings)
  • Reading streak data (streak count, last read date)
  • Articles read log (timestamps of reading activity)

App Usage

  • Badge and achievement progress
  • Streak freeze usage
  • Friends and leaderboard data
  • Referral activity
  • Notification preferences
  • Tutorial completion status

Demographic Information (Optional)

In Settings, under "About You", you can choose to tell us:

  • Your age range (for example "25–34")
  • Your gender
  • Your broad working situation (for example "Student")

Every one of these questions is optional. You can skip them, answer only some, choose "Prefer not to say", or change or clear your answers at any time. Nothing in the app is withheld from you if you leave them blank. We ask for ranges rather than a date of birth or a job title, because a range is enough for what we need and less identifying.

These answers are never shown on your profile and are never visible to other Broaden readers.

Analytics Data

  • App usage events (screens viewed, features used, buttons tapped)
  • Device type and operating system
  • General engagement patterns

Subscription Data

  • Subscription status (free or Pro)
  • Purchase history (processed by Google Play / Apple App Store)

3. How We Use Your Data

  • To provide the service: Curating your daily articles based on your topic preferences and feedback, tracking your reading streak, managing your saved articles and notes, and operating the friends leaderboard.
  • To show your reading to friends: Articles you finish appear in the Reading feed of people you have added as friends. You can turn this off in Settings under Privacy.
  • To improve article curation: Your thumbs up/down feedback and reading patterns are used to personalise future article recommendations via our AI curation system.
  • To manage your account: Authentication, subscription management, and syncing your data across devices.
  • To analyse and improve the app: Understanding how features are used so we can make Broaden better. We use Mixpanel for analytics and Sentry for crash and error reporting.
  • To understand who reads Broaden: If you give us demographic information, we use it to shape what we build and to describe our readership to publishers and partners. When we do that, we only ever report grouped totals — never your individual answers, and never anything that identifies you. We do not sell this information.
  • To show ads (free tier only): Free users see occasional ads served by Google AdMob to support the app. Pro subscribers see no ads. Ads are not personalised based on your reading activity inside Broaden. If you tell us you are under 18, we automatically switch your ads to non-personalised and limit them to the most restrictive content rating Google offers.
  • To send notifications: Daily reading reminders, if you choose to enable them.

4. AI-Powered Article Curation

Broaden uses artificial intelligence (Anthropic's Claude API) in three places, and it is worth being specific about which of them involve anything you wrote.

  • Choosing your articles. The AI receives the topics you selected and a short summary of your recent feedback — the articles you gave a thumbs up or down — and uses them to personalise what you are shown.
  • Suggesting a takeaway. When you finish an article, the AI reads that article's own text to offer you an opening line. Nothing of yours is involved, and the suggestion is only ever a starting point: it fills the box for you to edit, and it never saves anything on its own.
  • Sorting the takeaway you wrote. If you save a takeaway, its text is sent once to the AI, which returns a single word describing whether you broadly agreed with the piece, disagreed, or were unsure. We keep that one word next to your takeaway so it can improve what we choose for you later.

Only the third of those involves your own writing, so to be plain about it: your takeaway is classified, not published. It stays private to you, it is never shown to other readers, and the word that comes back is a signal for curation rather than anything anyone sees.

In none of these cases does the AI receive your email address, your name, or anything else that identifies you.

5. Legal Basis for Processing

Under UK GDPR, we process your data on the following legal bases:

  • Contract: Processing necessary to provide the Broaden service you signed up for.
  • Legitimate interests: Analytics to improve the app, and showing the articles you finish to friends you have added, provided this does not override your rights and freedoms. You can object to the second at any time by turning off sharing in Settings under Privacy.
  • Consent: Push notifications, and the optional demographic information you choose to give us in Settings. You can withdraw either at any time — for demographics, by clearing your answers under Settings → About You.

6. Who We Share Your Data With

Other Broaden readers

Broaden has a Reading feed: the articles you finish appear to people you have added as friends, shown as your name and the article's title and publication. Friendships are mutual, so only someone you have accepted can see this, and removing a friend removes their access straight away.

This is on by default. We tell you the first time you finish an article, and you can turn it off whenever you like in Settings under Privacy — turning it off also removes the reads you have already shared, rather than only stopping new ones. You can hide any single read without changing the setting.

What is never shared: your takeaways and notes, which stay private to you whatever this setting says, along with your saved articles, your demographic answers, and your email address.

We also share your data with the following third-party service providers who help us operate Broaden:

We do not sell your personal data to anyone. We never pass your reading activity, your demographic answers, or your account details to advertisers. Ads shown in the free tier are served by Google AdMob using your device's advertising identifier, which Google may use to personalise the ads you see; you can reset or limit that identifier in your device settings, and we request non-personalised ads for anyone who has told us they are under 18.

7. International Data Transfers

Some of our service providers are based outside the UK. When we transfer your data internationally, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, including Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

8. How Long We Keep Your Data

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account:

  • Your account data, reading history, and saved articles are deleted within 30 days.
  • Anonymised analytics data may be retained for up to 12 months.
  • Backup copies may persist for up to 90 days before being permanently deleted.

9. Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification: Ask us to correct inaccurate data.
  • Erasure: Ask us to delete your data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Portability: Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Restriction: Ask us to limit how we process your data.
  • Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Withdraw consent: Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@broadendaily.com. We will respond within 30 days.

10. Children's Privacy

Broaden is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

The optional age question in Settings includes an "Under 18" option. If you select it, we treat your account more carefully: we ask Google to serve you non-personalised ads only, and we cap ad content at the most restrictive rating available. We do not use your age to change what articles you are shown, and we do not pass it to anyone outside Broaden except as part of a grouped total.

You are never required to answer the age question, and you can clear your answer at any time.

11. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS), secure authentication, and access controls on our database. However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by email. The "last updated" date at the top indicates when it was last revised.

13. Contact and Complaints

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at hello@broadendaily.com.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
